The Creative Commons is a nonprofit that provides flexible licensing for artists that allows them to decide how their works may be used by others. Artists who choose to license their work through CC can make their work freely available to others without losing their ownership under the laws of copyright. This means that when we use Creative Commons-licensed content we find online, we aren't violating copyright laws. This came up when some of my coworkers expressed trepidation at using photos they found online without giving credit or even knowing the provenance of the image. In order to avoid this issue, we can use CC-licensed photos without worrying about copyright violation. My favorite way to search for CC images is through Flickr.
To search for Creative Commons images:
1. Go to http://www.flickr.com/.
2. Click on the "search" button without entering any search terms.
3. Click on "advanced search."
4. Type your search term in the box and apply any other limiters you would like.
5. Scroll down to the CC logo. Click the box labeled "only search Creative Commons-licensed content."
6. Click on the "search" button.
The results you return should be ready for you to use guilt- and copyright-violation-free. :)

Very cool! Thanks for sharing this with us. I will share it in my next mass emailing to all NetTrek participants!
ReplyDeleteI also thank you for mentioning Flickr, which I am more comfortable with. I had never heard of Picasa before we started this.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah:
ReplyDeleteThanks for turning me onto Creative Commons and instructing me in its use. I've had fun adding images to my blog posts, adding more interest.
